Lead Time, Transport Time, Working Day, Calendar Day, and Delivery Window

1. Lead Time VS Transport Time: 


For D2D (Door to door) shipments,


Lead time is calculated from the point when the freight forwarder picks up the goods (or when the supplier delivers the goods to the freight forwarder's warehouse in China) until they reach the final destination. It encompasses the entire service duration provided by the freight forwarder.


Transport time is often calculated from the sailing date until the final destination. It typically excludes the time during which your goods are held at the freight forwarder's warehouse and the Chinese terminal awaiting vessel loading.


Without any specific clarification, the time figures on a freight forwarder's quotation for ocean freight should typically refer to transport time, whereas for air shipments, they should denote lead time. If your freight forwarder emphasizes the takeoff day for air shipments, they might be exploiting this misunderstanding to reduce the level of service provided to you.


2. Working Day & Calendar Day


Typically, if a freight forwarder mentions "Working Day", their actual lead time might be double the number of working days. Weekends, Chinese national holidays, destination country holidays, strikes, etc., are not included in their estimated time frame. TranBay's quotations and analyses do not consider 'Working Days' as a reference. This is an irresponsible practice, rendering such time frame analyses meaningless. For us, the only real force majeure events that could prevent us from fulfilling our commitments are things like large-scale strikes or wars. Customs inspections or issues with shipping companies not keeping their schedules aren’t considered force majeure—those are just excuses. For example, ocean carriers now offer “space guarantee” services, which means if you book a COSCO container with a guaranteed space, your goods won’t be rolled over to another voyage. As for customs inspections, they mostly depend on the clearance ability of your freight forwarder. DDU or DAP shipments rarely face customs inspections, while DDP shipments often contain products with questionable values. Some unprofessional freight forwarders exploit loopholes, which can trigger customs checks. At TranBay, we don't use these kinds of excuses to avoid fulfilling our commitments.     Yes, we do offer drop shipping services, and we can manage your POs based on your ASINs or variations. We have a specialized logistics system for clients, where you can log in and directly click to confirm which products will be sent to which customers. It’s a one-unit-at-a-time fulfillment service.

    However, this service is not available to all customers. If you haven’t used our shipping services from China to the U.S., and only have a small number of units to fulfill using our U.S. warehouse, we won’t be able to provide this service. Drop shipping can be quite complex, and our primary focus is on large shipments rather than small-scale fulfillment.


  • We know that door-to-door shipping consists of both the main transport leg and the final delivery. Which companies handle your final mile delivery?

    Typically, our final mile delivery is handled by trucking companies. In some cases, once the goods reach the port, they might be transported by rail to the destination state or province, and then delivered by truck to the final location. The details of our trucking partners are considered proprietary for competitive reasons, but the major express companies we work with for final delivery, such as UPS, FedEx, DHL, and DPD, are known to all of our clients. When we quote for shipments, many of our customers specifically request "Sea + UPS," meaning they want their goods to be delivered via a large express company after arriving at port, rather than using our own trucking service. Some clients prefer to use our own trucks, though, to ensure optimal cost allocation. It's worth noting that UPS/FedEx have a lot of additional charges tied to various conditions, like overweight surcharges if a carton exceeds 22.5 kg, or oversized charges if the dimensions are over 80 cm. However, when you choose our own trucking service, you'll hardly encounter any extra fees.
